Chopped and dispersed food enhances foraging and reduces stress-related behaviours in captive white-naped mangabeys (Cercocebus lunulatus)

چکیده

The white-naped mangabey is an endangered and rare zoo species, yet little known concerning their welfare in captivity. assessment of should incorporate a net balance negative positive behavioural indicators. These behaviours, thus welfare, can be affected by the way food presented based on its distribution, clumped or dispersed, size, chopped whole. This study investigated effect presentation time-budget behaviours (i.e. forage, activity, inactivity, allogroom, self-groom, play) stress-related measures (i.e., diarrhoea, aggression, self-directed behaviours), four crossed-over test conditions distribution. group-living mangabeys Rotterdam Zoo were provided with vegetables that differed distribution size: clumped-chopped, dispersed-whole, dispersed-chopped, clumped-whole. Mangabeys spent least time being inactive subordinates juveniles most foraging during dispersed-chopped condition, while reversed was found clumped-whole condition. In addition, stole more often engaged less compared dispersed-whole. contrast, size did not affect play, self-grooming diarrhoea. Consistent literature, chopped, dispersed items appeared to best, whereas presenting whole worst for welfare. conclusion, distributed instead manner suggested improve zoo-housed mangabeys.

Helicobacter Species Identified in Captive Sooty Mangabeys (Cercocebus atys) with Metastatic Gastric Adenocarcinoma.

BACKGROUND Of all human cancers, gastric carcinoma is the one of the leading causes of death. Helicobacter pylori is considered a major etiologic agent of this disease. Spontaneously occurring gastric carcinoma is a rare diagnosis in nonhuman primates. A 2011 case report documented a high incidence of gastric adenocarcinoma in a closed colony of captive sooty mangabeys (Cercebus atys). However,...

Dominance Hierarchy and Spatial Distribution in Captive Red-Capped Mangabeys (Cercocebus torquatus torquatus): Testing Hemelrijk’s Agent-Based Model

We empirically tested Hemelrijk’s agent-based model (Hemelrijk, 1998), in which dyadic agonistic interaction between primate-group subjects determines their spatial distribution and whether or not the dominant subject has a central position with respect to the other subjects. We studied a group of captive red-capped mangabeys (Cercocebus torquatus torquatus) that met the optimal conditions for ...

Changes in physiological stress and behaviour in semi-free-ranging red-capped mangabeys (Cercocebus torquatus) following antiparasitic treatment.

Parasites are ubiquitous in wildlife populations, but physiological and behavioural responses of hosts to infection are difficult to measure. We experimentally treated semi-free-ranging red-capped mangabeys (Cercocebus torquatus) in Nigeria with antiparasitic drugs and examined subsequent changes in glucocorticoid production and individual behaviour. Because both parasites and stress impact ene...

Reproductive parameters of captive grey-cheeked mangabeys.

This paper reports reproductive parameters for 9 female grey-cheeked mangabeys kept in a captive colony over a 17-year period. Birth seasonality has shown a consistent trend towards an autumn peak. Oestrous cycles had an average length of 31.2 days: however 'short-cycle' (29.9 days) and 'long-cycle' (37.7 days) groups could be discriminated. Gestation was 175 days, with little variability. Vari...

Aggressive behaviours, food deprivation and the foraging gene

A pleiotropic gene governs multiple traits, which might constrain the evolution of complexity due to conflicting selection on these traits. However, if the pleiotropic effect is modular, then this can facilitate synergistic responses to selection on functionally related traits, thereby leveraging the evolution of complexity. To understand the evolutionary consequence of pleiotropy, the relation...
